home is where their hurt is

I can hear the roof caving in from hundreds of miles away
while the storm that's been brewing for the last decade
finally decides to set in
I'm reminded that all this shattered glass
will only lead to window pain

when suddenly mom's and dad's rings don't mean a thing

too many earthquakes are caused
by pointing out other's fault-lines
but even some of the strongest foundations
won't withstand the mudslide

I hope they've been taught how to swim
for when the tsunami hits
because they'll have to save the littler ones
when the riptide pulls them in

I wish I could hug them
and tell them I love them
and that daddy loves them
and that mommy loves them
and that we all love them

they're too young for this
they don't deserve it
their home is the one place
that shouldn't feel broken

to my nieces and nephews,

please remember
you are loved more than you will ever know
and this doesn't change that.
